MEDIA LANGUAGE

Repetition of these signs become Horror genre conventions, however overuse results in taking away the signified meaning.

Media language focuses on the language and codes used in film. It also takes camera, sound, editing, mise en scene into consideration and how these can be decoded. The word for the study of signs is semiotics. Repetition is used everywhere. But the problem with this is that when certain conventions are constantly repeating themselves the audience becomes desensitised and forgets the meaning as a whole.

Ferdinand de Saussure the theorist talks about signifier and signified. Signifier is the physical form off a sign for example a knife(phallic object). Signified which is the concept that the signifier produces and that would be that the fact that the knife is a phallic object which when cutting flesh is a sexual representation. Not many signifiers were used in our trailer, one of the only signifiers used was the white shirt that one of the teenager was wearing connoting purity and the blood that is on her top later is a yonic symbol.

There are three main types of codes in semiotics are symbolic, technical, written and audio. Lighting was used in my trailer to show the good and the evil linking back to Levi Strauss's binary opposites that make the film(trailer in this case successful). The light scenes were used to represent a sense of comfort and lack of danger where as the darker tones were meant to show eeriness and danger or fear. They were also there to distinguish the past and present and also create the right mood. The setting and location was in a forest/woodland area which is seen as a convention that is repeated.

Technical camera angles usedrepetedly in film were not really used as we were mainly moving the camera along following every single move. But with my knowledge of the different stock shots to use for example tracking, tilt shot, pan shot, zoom shot, steady cam, hand held, birds eye view, worms eye view and two shot. However technical codes are used to help the audience understand the trailer. For example a zoom shot is used to signify how the subject feels intimidated and that there is a lack of space. High angle shots are used to communicate to the audience that the subject is most likely the victim and the audience feels sympathy.

Written codes such as font and colour on a poster for example text on the trailer or on magazine covers. Conventional colours used are hite and red. White text is normally used with a black background to connote how there is way more evil than good pure and innocent which the white connotes.

Audio codes is most important as the audio is what builds atmosphere. The audience know whats going to happen later on in the trailer.
