Dawn of the dead
June 29 1980
Zack Synder
Zombie
The first scene shows a moon that basically covers 3/4 this is effective as darkness is taking over the world leading the viewers to the assumption that evil near. This could be considered as a warning sign. Another thing I notice is that when the woman screams the audience start to question what is going on, however when the man screams it’s almost as if the zombies have stripped him of his masculinity. This further suggests that zombies (similar to vampires) are a sexual representations which could link to religious points of all. "It will consume us all" frightens us because we are scared of what we have no control over "accurate vision...the mindless excess of our society" is said when the zombies grab the woman’s jewellery this links to consumerism.
Halloween 31st August 2007 John Carpenter Slasher
The first scene is an establishing shot that shows a house that’s white which suggests purity is surrounded by the dark and mysterious. Creepy music in the background makes the audience feel uneasy which includes the emotional pleasures that viewers want mentioned by Altman. The next scene that stands out to me shows three girls who are casually walking, this adds to the realism so what happens later has a great effect. The same three girls are then targeted and are lying dead on her bed with a gravestone behind her, which creates suspense and would have scared the audience. The woman is posted down the stairs which generates fear and confusion. Women are the victims as women are seen as helpless and vulnerable whereas the male is usually the antagonist associated with authority and dominance. The knife signifies phallic imagery used before knocking her on the floor. The trailer/film is set in lowkey lighting (a key convention) which is important because otherwise it would seem like a normal day and it would scare the audience or they would not recognise it to be a horror.
Scream 2 May 1997 Wes Craven Slasher
The creepy voice of the killer causes suspicion. This is a deconstruction trailer which makes it appeal to people who both know the main conventions of this genre trailer. This is clearly about teen punishment. This trailer is also effective because of its montage (fast cuts) and it gives some of the film away but still keeps the audience interested. At first the girl answers the phone which is iconic because she’s seen as the dumb blonde and continues the conversation. In addition because the blonde/most pretty/popular girl is viewed as the slut and goes against the view of no sex before marriage she is killed first as a warning that many deaths are now going to occur.
Nightmare of Elm Street 12 June 1986 Wes Craven Slasher
The man running away suggests that there is danger, it also subverts the idea that men are the brave hero’s and are dominant. As a matter of fact running away from the situation connotes lack of masculinity and he has become a girl. This trailer is effective as it shows what happens when we do bad things so this acts as a lesson to target the people of the town. The childhood nature draws the audience in. When the child chants “9, 10 never sleep again” it shows that the town will not rest as sleep denotes peace and rest. “this won’t hurt one little bit” could refer to the phrase used when a man wants to either de-virgin or rape a woman. To add to this view the mans claws which can be seen as phallic imagery are about to cut/penetrate her. The girl is seen as attractive because of her blonde hair. Teaches audience not to be bad because the outcome is bad(like karma). They made the monsters. Claws are sharp and fierce objects used to terrify the victims. Antagonists face is covered suggesting that he is hiding something but in this case the bad that people try to hide has taken over.
Saw 1 October 2004 James Wan
This trailer has a lot of cuts this becomes a montage. The theme of this trailer seems to be a game which is childlike and draws the attention of the audience as the theme and actions contradict each other. The antagonist
