How does the concepts of genre relate to your trailer?

I will be talking about my horror trailer I made over the summer holiday which is a Slasher. Genre is used to show the difference between a horror and and a romance film for example. Within the horror genre there are sub genres like Slasher, Psycological and Splatter. Genre is put together by the common conventions of differnt sub genres.

The first major point that should stand out when re watching my trailer was that I wasn't able to tell the genre apart. The main theorist that talks about this is Daniel Chandler he says 'genre is type'. Genre should be familiar and recognisable to the audience, by the looks of it the genreof my trailer is unrecognisable as it doesn't use the key Slasher conventions like low key lighting and stock characters ie; the dumbblonde, the jock, the final girl.Using the main stock characters would make my trailer more recognisable so the audience will be familiar. Adding onto that there is normally a male killer who is hunting down teenagers and stabbing them usually with a knive which is phallic imagery and connotes penetration linking to sexual representation.

Secondly Mittle talks about how genre allows audience to make choices which is a guide to tell the audience what they like or dislike. Audiences will of course already have had previous experiences so they can tell what they prefer or decide that they don't want to go and see a splatter because it's too gory and want to see a horror that is more commical like Cabin in the Woods. In my trailer because the genre is not recognisable(Slasher) the audience won't be able t tell whether they like or dislike my trailer which would result in no one coming to watch the movie or everyone coming to view the film and being dissapointed because it's not their prefernce. If I applied this to my trailer it would have a better outcome by using low key lighting rather than filming in broad daylight and making what was happening clearer and establishing my antagonist, using the key characters and making it clear that my trailer is specially for a Slasher film.

Rich Altman gives us an insight on he different pleasures that should be included in my trailer, emotional or viseral. Point being that differnet types of pleasures should be included in my trailer otherwise the trailer is not sucessful. These pleasures are not evident when watching my trailer as when viewing it there is not a strong audience responce(emotional pleasure) orany viseral pleasures which are gut responces. In my trailer their is not tension built and it just looks like their are people running around a woodland area. Instead my trailer wanted to be an intellectual puzzle but failed to do. Following Althussers theory I would argue that my trailer isn't that effective as it does not have any emotional pleasure that scares the audience or viseral pleasure that makes my audience disgusted for example. As I have not included any of these pleasures so it's no surpise according to Altman that my trailer wasn't sucessful.

Metz says genre are processes that evolve over time. To relate to whats going on now so the audience doesn't become bored, this means sometimes genres can interlink so my trailer could be seen as a psychological cause to some as the characters seemed confused. However I don't think I would like to use this theory by Metz because I don't want my audience to end up confused too.
