Research & Planning essay

How have you developed in your Research & Planning skills across the 2 years?

At AS I produced a hip hop/r & b music magazine and at A2 I am in the process of completing my horror teaser trailer. Research helps to expand your understanding of something and planning is used to make sure the actual product is executed successfully. However this effects creativity as I am limited and can only re imagine something and input a new idea.

In AS I had no idea how to make a music magazine and meet the expectations of a Target Audience as I did not understand the reason certain aspects that make up a magazine (conventions) were put in place. In addition I had not done my research and planning effectively and looked at many other magazines, as a result of this I mainly used my imagination of what I thought a magazine should look like. However in A2 I now know the reasons behind certain conventions and have done my research and planning thoroughly and looking at theories has helped me to understand that different sub genres are used to enable the audience to pick and choose as well as differentiate between what they like or dislike.
In AS I did do R&P however it did not go into depth and I was given no template. As a result I only looked at around two or three music magazines of my chosen genre and that is why the end product of my music magazine was not a success. However in A2 due to R&P I have now looked at many horror trailers and know how to structure my own trailer and I have an understanding of the reasons of some common conventions. However because I have looked at so many examples of trailers which leads me to generic copying, however creativity can still emerge even though I was copying and reimagining previous ideas.
I looked at different magazines in order to produce my AS magazine. Vibe, XXL, NME and the source.  Once looking at one or two of these magazines I began to go off my idea of what a magazine is like. I didn’t know why I was using conventions however but still reinforced them, however not to a good standard due to the fact that I didn’t understand. In terms of creativity we copied other magazines as well as the structure and reinvented them which limited my creativity.
In comparison the horror trailer I am in the process of making is bound to be successful due to the amount of R&P. I now know that I have a deeper understanding. I have looked at a vast amount of trailers from the different genres and due to my trailer being a Slasher I have spent time watching films and trailer of my specific genre in order to copy the conventions and input them into my upcoming teaser trailer. I now know there are certain meanings behind the characters for example the dumb blond is blonde, pretty, popular and a slut so as usual she dies first.
To conclude my skills have developed because from my AS magazine to my A2 horror trailer I have improved. For example at AS I completed four sketched drafts where as in A2 I have completed a detailed 35 shot story board. To complete the story board I also turned it into an animatic which was demanding as I had to play around with the tools in order to know what I was doing, but6 in the end I have learnt how to edit appropriately for my horror trailer using new software such as final cut pro as well as logic pro to produce my sound.
