INDIVIDUAL ANALYSIS OF 3 EXISTING HORROR TRAILERS
Vampires/Werewolves Subgenre
The first vampire movie was Nosferatu directed F. W. Murnauin 1922 is a present day twilight. Unlike other vampire horror films this film was displayed in black and white, as well as being a silent horror film which is not a key convention used in todays society. Rather the normal codes and conventions used in vampire/werewolf horror films are blood which connotes danger and mystery, teeth which can be viewed as phallic objects as they penetrate the skin to show a sexual representation as most vampires are males and this suggests male domination and authority (patriarchy). In addition the victim is usually helpless and a female(lack of femininity). Scenery is also an important factor due to the fact that vampires traditionally come out in the dark; which is a significant factor as darkness(mostly a gothic setting) connotes lack of rest, evil and death which is important when looking and conventions of vampires as they are the living dead. Modern versions of vampires and werewolves have been introduced such as vampire diaries and teen wolf.
Psychological horror
The first psychological horror film is Rosemary's baby in 1968. Most psychological horror films are about people being possessed. Psychological horror is very popular in modern day cinema however people love this subgenre of it's "realism" and ability to inflict fear on the audience. The most recent film that I have watched is 'Get Out' this can be placed in other different sub genres due to the types of punishment that is displayed in the film but I have concluded that it is psychological as well as many others because it has do to with mental emotional that unsettles the audience. It could be added that the main character was afraid of the loneliness and death and was in trauma, which are often the main themes of these films. The codes and conventions of psychological horror are weapons which connote power and freedom. Sound is used in these trailers to show the audience how to feel and when there is silence it puts them on edge. Typically I found that throughout the different trailers I watched there was a isolated house this is then used to isolate the characters from civilization. Such as in 'The Shinning' there is a isolated hotel.
Monster
The first monster film was Frankenstein in 1931 this was a period on enlightment so there was an advance in science and people where drawing away from being religious as they could find other explanations. Monster films which center around the stuggle between monsters and human beings. Usually this genre ties in with the supernatural and sci fi horror.Codes and conventions
